USE A CRICKET THERMOMETER

Did you know that the warmer it is outside, the faster a cricket will chirp? And believe it or not, you can figure out the temperature by counting cricket chirps and using a little math! Here’s how!

Directions:

  • To set up your “cricket thermometer” find out what the temperature is.
  • Listen to a cricket and count how many times it chirps in 15 seconds.
  • Write that number down on a piece of paper.
  • Subtract that number from the temperature.
This is the “magic number.”For example, if the temperature was 70 degrees and your cricket chirped 40 times, your magic number would be 30.
  • Now you can figure out the temperature any time you want to. Just count the number of cricket chirps in 15 seconds and add your magic number. The number you get is the temperature!
Bible Lesson
Crickets make their songs by rubbing the teeth of the file on one wing against the scraper on the other. Each “chirp” is actually a complicated combination of vibrations and harmonics. Truly it is a wonderful God who can create one of His “creeping things” with such amazing abilities. Each sound made by the cricket is one of praise to his Creator as it tells of the quality of God’s work in making the insect.
