HOW TALL
ARE YOU?

You could measure a tree with a really long tape measure and a helicopter, but with a little math, it’s a whole lot easier to figure out the height of a tree using only a ruler and a piece of chalk.

Supplies:

• Ruler
• Chalk

Directions:
  • Use the ruler to measure on the trunk of a tree 5 feet from the ground. Mark the spot with the chalk.
  • Hold the ruler at eye level with your arm outstretched. Shut one eye and back away from the tree until the bottom 5 feet of the tree trunk appears to be the same length as the bottom ½ inch space on your ruler.
  • Measure the height of the tree in inches. Multiply that number by 10 and you’ll get the height of the tree in feet. (If ½ inch equals 5 feet, then each inch equals 10 feet.)

Bible Lesson
The taller a tree is, the longer its taproot is. The taproot is the strong root that comes directly out of the bottom of the tree, anchors it in the soil and gives the tree strength. If a tree has a strong taproot, when the winds blow and the storms come, the tree will be able to endure it. As Christians, we have a strong taproot, too. Our root is Jesus. The more time we spend with Him, the stronger our roots become. Then when Satan comes to annoy and tempt us, we will have the strength and courage to tell him, NO!
