Q: If Satan knows that he will be killed in the lake of fire when Jesus comes, then why doesn't he stop being bad?
A: Dear Bianca,
Of course, I can't tell you exactly what Satan is thinking, but I will do my best to answer your question.

First of all, Satan's rebellion against God began with pride. The Bible tells us that his "heart was proud" (Ezekiel 28:17). Pride causes people to be self-important, egotistical and stubborn. Have you ever known you were wrong about something, but instead of admitting it you kept pretending you were right? I have! I was just being stubborn instead of being repentant and asking forgiveness. In one of my favorite books called The Great Controversy, the author tells us on page 495 that "Lucifer was convinced that he was in the wrong… But pride forbade him to submit." In other words, he was too stubborn to admit he was wrong! That's one reason he doesn't stop being bad.

Another reason is because he hates Jesus, and even though he knows he's going to lose, he wants to hurt Jesus as much as possible before that time. He also knows that the way to hurt Jesus the most is by hurting the ones He loves the most – us! The Bible tells us that Satan has come down to our earth "in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" (Revelation 12:12). He wants to do as much damage as he can before he runs out of time. That's just how evil he is, and all who don't choose to follow Jesus have no other choice but to be on the devil's side. Don't you want to choose Jesus now and every day? I hope so! Then we can share Jesus with all the people Satan is trying to destroy, and bring great joy to the heart of Jesus and God the Father!

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
