Q: How do I know when I have Jesus in my heart?
A: Dear Xenia,
Your question is a very important one. The Bible says that Jesus dwells in our hearts by faith (Ephesians 3:17). The apostle Paul wrote “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Notice that Paul says when He is living by faith Jesus lives IN HIM. That means that Jesus lives His life through us when He is in our hearts. When Jesus comes into our hearts, we will begin to love spiritual things, like reading the Bible and other spiritual books, listening to spiritual music, and treating people the way Jesus treated them. We will begin to hate our sinfulness – our sinful habits, unkind words and actions, and so on. We will love the things Jesus loves and hate the things Jesus hates. Nobody loves these things naturally (1 Corinthians 2:14). We must have Jesus in our hearts. We called this being “born again.”

Remember that this life is a life of FAITH. The Bible says “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). In other words, the life of faith isn’t always based on what we see, or what we FEEL LIKE. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, and choose to follow Him, He will put those new desires for spiritual things in our hearts, but that doesn’t mean we will never be tempted to want to do wrong. We must walk (live) by faith. We must trust our lives to Jesus, and ask Him to live IN US.

If you feel that Jesus isn’t in your heart, because you don’t love spiritual things, then ask Jesus to give you a new heart. And keep asking until you get it – He will surely give it to you. Jesus really wants to live in our hearts, but sometimes they are so full of other things that He can’t get in. When you pray, He may show you things in your heart that may be crowding Him out – music you may be listening to, friends you are hanging out with that may be a bad influence, or other things. You must be willing to remove those things that Jesus shows you are in the way before you can receive your new heart, but Jesus will give you the strength to do it. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13). Xenia, continue to seek Him with all your heart, and you will find Him!

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
