Q: My mom lets me have a phone and I charge it every to week or so. And my question is: Is it OK to charge your phone on sabbath?
A: Dear Charity,
We need to remember that the Sabbath is as much about what we DO as what we DON’T DO. The reason that we are to keep from all unnecessary work on the Sabbath is so that we can spend time in worship and fellowship and service for Jesus. We also want to avoid making others do any unnecessary work on the Sabbath, so they can keep the Sabbath also (see Deuteronomy 5:14). I don’t believe charging your cell phone would be violating either of those principles. It is not hindering you from keeping the Sabbath holy, nor is it keeping someone else from keeping the Sabbath holy. There is much work that is appropriate on the Sabbath, and that is working to serve others, like visiting church members who are sick or can’t get out, and sharing God’s truth with others. The reason we don’t want to be busy with ordinary work on the Sabbath is because it would keep us from spending time in worship at church and service afterward.
So charge your cell phone with confidence, and then use it to call someone who couldn’t make it to church and let them know you missed them!

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
