Anneca (11)
Q: You know when it is Jesus birthday how come they put up santa claus and not Jesus?
A: Dear Anneca,
First it is important to know that December 25 was actually a pagan holiday before anybody ever celebrated Jesus’ birth on that day. That doesn’t make it wrong to celebrate Jesus birth on that day. We aren’t really sure when Jesus was born, because the Bible doesn’t tell us. And there is no other day that we celebrate His birth, so it is important to celebrate it sometime.

The legend of Santa Claus began with the story of a real man names Nicholas who was a leader of the Christian church in Myra, a province of modern-day Turkey. He became famous because of his generous gifts to the poor. He became known as “Saint Nicholas,” or “Sinterklaas” , which means “the good saint”. Of course, this is where the word “Santa Claus” comes from. From there, the story grew to what it has become today, mixed together with many different pieces of folklore and legends.

The reason why Santa Claus is in the place of Jesus is because the devil is always working to get our minds off of Jesus and on to something else, even something that may seem good. And while Saint Nicholas was real, Santa Claus is not. This makes some people think that the story of Jesus, with all of its miracles, was just a legend, too, and takes away their faith in Jesus.

So while we can appreciate the history of Saint Nicholas, and we can understand how people want to believe in someone who’s loving and kind to all the boys and girls, we also know that Christmas is about Jesus, and we can take the opportunity to tell people about the best Christmas gift – God’s gift of Jesus to the world!

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
