Q: What if you are a christian but for once in your religion you sin. do you think God would hold it against you and you dont go to heaven?
A: Dear Shane,
Thanks so much for your question. First of all, If you only sin once in your religion, you are doing better than most. Peter sinned at least once in his Christian experience when He denied Jesus (Luke 24:54-62). The fact is that the Bible tells us he sinned a number more times than that, and so did the rest of the disciples. The Bible tells us we have all sinned (Romans 3:23), and of course, the goal of the Christian life is not to sin, but sometimes we do (1 John 2:1). But Jesus said “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32). And the apostle Paul wrote “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” (1 Timothy 1:15).

The Bible promises us that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9). But it also warns “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13). The important thing is that we recognize our sin, admit it, confess it to God and choose to turn away from it. Then we can know we have God’s forgiveness.

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
