Shanica (0)
Q: When we get to heaven will we still have our free will? If yes, do you think that that someone will sin?
A: Dear Shanica,
What a very thoughtful question! The answer is Yes, we will have our free will. Free will, or freedom of choice, is something that God gives every creature. If He didn’t, then Satan and his angels could never have rebelled; Adam and Eve could never have sinned; and we could never choose to disobey. While God knows that disobedience is wrong, He doesn’t force us to do right. He wants us to obey Him out of love. But the only way we can do that is if we have the ability to choose, because love is a choice. You can’t force someone to love.

Of course, that leads to your next question – If we still can choose, how do we know nobody will choose to sin in heaven? That is the whole reason that God allows some of the terrible things that happen on the earth. He doesn’t make bad things happen, but many times he doesn’t stop them from happening, because they are the results of our bad choices. God is trying to teach us that sin is always a bad choice so nobody would ever want to choose it again. Satan tries to make sin look fun, and he does a good job of it. That’s why we disobey sometimes. And sometimes when we do disobey, it does seem fun for a little while. But sooner or later our disobedience leads to big trouble. This is God’s way of teaching us that His way is best. The people who finally go to heaven will make that choice by their free will – that God’s way is best always. Then, when God takes them to heaven, they won’t ever sin because they have learned to choose what is good and right.

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!
