Q: One time we went to a bible class and I wanted to read the BIBLE, and i was keep reading and it said in the bible dumb what does that mean? Is that a bad word?
A: Dear Charity,
I’m so glad you’re watching Kids’ Time, and that you want to read your Bible!

When we use the word dumb, sometimes it is in an unkind way. Sometimes people call other people “dumb” and they mean that the person isn’t smart. The word “dumb” really means “mute; someone who can’t talk”. People used to think that when a person couldn’t talk, they must be retarded. But we know that’s not true. Some people have speech problems, but they are very smart. Many deaf people are also dumb (they can’t talk – at least not very well), but they are very smart people.

So when you read the word “dumb” in the Bible, just remember it’s talking about someone who can’t speak. And also remember that it is unkind to call people “dumb” to mean they are stupid, not smart, or something like that.

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
