|Q: Why did God make Satan even though God knew that in the future Satan would cause sin?
|A: Dear Prem,
|shis question is one that comes in often.
First of all, God knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:9). That means He knows what we don’t know, so there may be things He does that we don’t understand because we don’t know what he knows!
God did not create the devil. He created Lucifer, and beautiful angel that was blameless in his ways from the day he was created (Ezekiel 28:15). God is a creator, and loves to create. The challenge God has is that He is a God of love, and wants his creatures to serve Him out of love. But love requires us to be able to choose to give our love. And the only way a person can have the freedom of choice is to have the freedom to do wrong if they so choose. God allowed Satan, and his angels, and Adam, and Eve, and you and me to choose who we would obey. His only other option would be to either force his creatures to obey, or to just not create anyone who would disobey.
Now think of this for a minute. Have you ever disobeyed? I’m sure you have. So have I. What if God decided that, because we were going to disobey, He just wouldn’t create us? Or what if our moms and dads said, “If I have children, they will probably disobey me at least sometime, so why bother with them. We just won’t have any kids.” If that happened, nobody would have kids, and the entire human race would simply die out of existence! Instead our parents, knowing that we may disobey, have kids anyway so we can have the opportunity to learn obedience. God also wants us to have the choice to learn obedience. He wanted Lucifer to have this choice. Lucifer chose wrong, but many others have chosen right. God’s plan is to teach all His creatures the dangers of sin and the importance of obedience so that when He does take us to heaven, even though we still could choose to do wrong, never would choose wrong because we have learned the importance of choosing what is right.
We, too, have the same choice that Lucifer had. We see where his choice led him. We should consider it a special privilege that God has given us the freedom of choice, and choose to serve Jesus with all our heart.
Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!
