|Q: Will we remember our loved ones in the resurrection?
|A: Dear Sandhya,
|Thanks for such a good question, and let me share with you a wonderful Bible promise. Your question is a question people asked in Bible times. When our loved ones die, will we see them again, and when we do, will we know them and will they know us?
When the apostle Paul was talking to Christians who lost loved ones to death, he told them “We want you to know about those Christians who have died so you will not be sad, as others who have no hope… The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, ?? and with the trumpet call of God. And those who have died believing in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive will be gathered up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And we will be with the Lord forever. Then he finished by saying “So encourage each other with these words”
(1 Thes. 4:13, 16-18, New Century Version).
Paul knew how sad it is when people we love die, but he wanted Christians to encourage each other by telling them about the resurrection so we wouldn’t be sad like the people who don’t have the hope we have – the hope of the resurrection. In other words, our encouragement that gives us hope is that we will see our loved ones again in the resurrection. But what hope would that be if we didn’t know them or they didn’t know us? It wouldn’t be any hope at all. But the Bible tells us about it to give us hope, because we WILL know our loved ones, and they WILL know us, and we will be together again, and won’t that just be GREAT!
So even though we are sad for a little while, we know that the goodbye we say to people at death is not goodbye forever for those who loved Jesus. That is why it is so important that we let our loved ones know about Jesus, so that we can spend eternity together!
Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!
