Q: Hi if you have done something wrong and then you ask god for his forgiveness and you truly are sorry for it but later you say no and regret saying sorry for it will God still forgive you?
A: Dear Riarna,
When we say we are sorry for our sin and truly mean it, that is what the Bible calls repentance. God always forgives sin we are truly sorry for. The Bible tells us that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and ?to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). But when we are sorry we repented, and want to sin again, what we have really done is told God by our actions that we no longer want His forgiveness. One of the problems comes with our understanding of forgiveness. The word “forgive” is made up of two words, “for” and “give”, and it literally means “to give for”. To ask God to forgive our sins is to ask Him to give something for our sins, in place of our sins. What did God give for our sins? The Bible says “Grace to you and peace ?from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, ?who gave himself for our sins” (Galatians 1:3-4). Jesus gave Himself for our sins. He gives us His righteousness – His own goodness – in place of our sins. In other words, we make a trade with Him – we give Him our sins, and He gives us His righteousness. We give Him all our badness, and He gives us all our goodness. But when we choose that we really didn’t want to give Him our badness, and we decide we want it back, we lose His goodness. We have chosen to give back God’s forgiveness.

Here’s the good news, Riarna. We can ask God to give us repentance AND forgiveness. That means He will give us a desire for what is right, and help us to stop loving what is wrong. Just be honest with God and say, “God, you know how I love this sin. Please help me to hate it, and to love you more.” Then confess that sin, and God will forgive it. And when you are tempted to take it back, ask yourself if that sin is worth losing all God’s goodness, and forgiveness, and heaven, and make the wise choice to serve God.

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Pastor Howard
