Q: I want to know why Jesus did not come and take the good people to heven?
A: Dear MIriam,
We’re so glad you’re enjoying our website, and thanks for such a good question!

First of all, we need to realize that in the Bible sense, no one is good but God. This is what Jesus told the Rich Young Ruler (see Mark 10:18). The Bible says in Romans 3:12 “No one does good,

not even one.” Even the Apostle Paul said “I know that nothing good dwells in me” (Romans 7:18). What all of these texts mean is just that without Jesus, none of us could ever be good. The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” (Romans 3:23-24). The point is that Jesus doesn’t take “good people” to heaven; he takes people who have accepted His sacrifice for their sins to heaven. That means that you or I or anyone else can never go to heaven unless we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Of course, now that we have accepted Him, we want Him to come and take us to heaven. But what about other people who haven’t accepted Him as Savior yet? Jesus wants them to be able to come to heaven, too. The Bible tells us that one of the reasons that Jesus has not come yet is because “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise… but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9-10). This tells us that Jesus is waiting because He wants to save as many people as He can. But people can’t accept Jesus if they don’t know about Him. This is why Jesus said “This gospel of the kingdom ?will be proclaimed throughout the whole world?as a testimony to all nations, and ?then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). The end cannot come until the gospel is preached and people have the chance to accept Jesus. But there is something we can do about it! Peter wrote that we should be “waiting for and hastening [speeding up] the coming of the day of God [the second coming of Jesus]…” (2 Peter 3:12). This means that we can speed up the coming of Jesus by sharing Him with others. This is why we say at Kids’ Time “It’s time to SHARE! There’s a world out there waiting for a friend like Jesus! Let’s tell them that He loves them SO!”

Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!

Your friend,
Pastor Howard
